2005 Synod Assembly

What is a Synod Assembly?

The Synod Assembly is the highest legislative authority in our synod. The synod's rostered leaders (pastors, associates in ministry, diaconal ministers, and deaconesses), lay voting members, and visitors come together once a year, in April, May, or June, to work on the synod's business. This year our Synod Assembly is scheduled for May 6-7, 2005, and our theme is "Called Into God's Marvelous Light...Today!"

What type of business does the synod do at Assembly?

Those assembled debate and vote on resolutions (see below); elect members to serve on synod committees, boards, and task forces; elect voters for the biennial ELCA Churchwide Assembly; worship; learn; and enjoy fellowship time together. The Synod Assembly is a wonderful time for voters and visitors to get to know people from around the synod.

What is a resolution?

A resolution is a formal statement of suggested action voted on by those assembled. Resolutions must be written in a certain format (read the resolution-writing guide here.) To see past resolutions, click here.

Who are the voting members of the Synod Assembly?

Voting members, who have the power to debate and vote on the resolutions, consist of the following:

1. All rostered leaders under call on the roster of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod

2. Two lay voting members from each congregation, plus additional lay voting members based on 2002 baptized membership: 901-1500, 1 additional; 1501-2100, 2 additional; 2101-2700, 3 additional; 2701-3300, 4 additional; 3301-3900, 5 additional; 3901-4500, 6 additional. The total lay voting members from any congregation should be as nearly as
possible 50% male and 50% female.

3. Members of the synod council and conference deans.

4. All retired rostered leaders on the roster of the synod shall elect 10% of their number to serve as voting members; all other retired clergy and associates in ministry shall be advisory members with voice but no vote. People from these groups should not be elected as congregational voting members.

Who are the visitors to the Synod Assembly?
