Over the past several years the synod’s New Ministry Table has done some great work. While much time has been spent with our five cutting edge African-National ministries, the table has had wider goals as they’ve engaged in wonderful conversations about new types of ministry in our synod. We’ve discussed exciting possibilities in Latino Ministry. We’ve bandied about ideas for Young Adult (Emergent) Ministry. We’ve explored opportunities for new ministries in the growing Rochester area.
It’s time to quit talking and start acting! The New Ministry Table has decided to “divide and discern!” Instead of having one table trying to cover all areas, we’re on a quest to form several groups with each group focused on a specific type of ministry. As people with similar passions gather together, things quickly progress past the “talking’’ stage. Things begin to happen!
Right now two groups are emerging. One will focus on Latino Ministry in our synod. Rev. Louis Cabello-Hansel of Minneapolis is becoming a wonderful resource for us as we seek to find connections with people in the Latino community. The other group will focus on Young Adult and Emergent Ministry. Several leaders in the Rochester area have begun contemplating God’s call to proclaim the Gospel in new ways to people who would not darken the door of a “traditional” ministry. If people with other passions step forward we’ll happily get more groups going. We’re not limited to these two.
I know that people around the synod have a heart for these kinds of ministries. We’d love for you to be a part of the conversation and action. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your congregation or community will take a lead in it. You may simply be a partner to those who are “on the ground.” You may have the gifts necessary to help something get started. If you feel called to step forward to help proclaim the Good News to new people, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at 507-545-2535.
