An Encouraging Story:
Many times technical colleges are overshadowed when they share a community with a university. Winona shares itself with three campuses: Winona State University, Saint Mary’s University, and Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical.
The Lutheran Campus Center (LCC) sees itself as a ministry for all three campuses. This year one of our student leaders hailed from Southeast Tech, which reminded WSU students of their presence and opened awareness for the struggles students face in tech schools. The LCC also reached out to Southeast Tech by sharing Pickwick coffee, a favorite blend from Mugby’s Junction, the coffee house we share space with. Campus Pastor Corrine met with students over coffee and offered it to passersby. Many wondered “what the catch was” when she insisted it was free.
Some asked if she was a spokesperson for Mugby’s or the “finals guru” leading up to exam week. Soon students and staff alike recognized the Mugby’s pot and the pastor handing out cups of delicious grace. They gathered around the pot each time to “catch up” or wonder about faith and life, remembering family stories and sharing dreams. A simple and seemingly small act became ritual and a way to build relationships with Southeast Tech, a not-forgotten-campus of God’s people.
One of the ways you can do this is by using the ELCA’s campus ministry website: http://elcacampusministry.org and its referral page. Encourage students to visit the campus ministry or congregation where they’ll be a student and check it out!
